Dr. Romulus Chelbegean, PhD, LMFT
Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist

Although many think my last name has Armenian roots, you should actually think of me as, „Romulus from Romania.” My existence can, indeed, easily be divided into two: my life in Romania, where I was born and raised, and my life in California, where I spent most of my adult years. Back in Eastern Europe, under Communism, I was, mainly, a registered nurse and a Christian minister. Here, in the United States, I have been, mainly, a graduate student, a marriage and family therapist and a university professor. The way I see it, what all these chosen careers have in common is my caring, loving and dedicated commitment to people’s holistic health, wellbeing, growth and development.

As a California Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, with doctoral studies in the field, my areas of expertise covers pretty much everything that can fit under the umbrella of counseling. While kids seem very comfortable with me, I prefer to work with teenagers, young adults, adults and seniors.

I feel at home with almost any psychological and psychiatric diagnosis listed in DSM V, whether they involve medication, treatment or not. I am familiar with most therapeutic theories, modalities and approaches, not only at the level of applying them, but up to the level of teaching them to graduate students in training.

I am confident to work with individuals of any cultural background, religious preference and/or sexual orientation, with non-marital, pre-marital, marital or post-marital couples and/or with any kind of family system, be it traditional or non-conventional. Because I am keenly aware of the difficult process of crossing cultural or spiritual barriers, through marriage, migration, or both, I am especially sensitive to first- or second-generation immigrant families and inter-religious families. For the above categories of counseling services, I usually reserve once a week or twice a month hourly session.
